Brian's Story

I am a big believer in the current DIY movement in music.  Forget the big labels - today’s best music is being made by independent artists who have the talent and the courage to do things on their own terms.  My mission is to find ways for me and other indie musicians make a living doing what we do best.  More on that in a minute.

I was born in our nation’s capital and raised in nearby Alexandria, Virginia.  A performer from day one, I have been obsessed with music, movies, theater, and TV for as long as I can remember.  As a child I starred in numerous school plays and discovered that I was never so happy as when I was on stage.

By high school, I was a major-league theater geek.  In addition to heavy involvement in my high school drama club, I performed and took acting classes at community theaters in Northern Virginia.

During these formative years, I also took up my first musical instrument - the bass.  (I figured there were thousands of teenage guys playing the guitar and I wanted to be different.)  I loved playing the bass, and had my first taste of the rock ‘n’ roll life with a couple of little garage bands that I jammed with from time to time.  I wrote my first original songs as well, and songwriting quickly became my favorite part of the creative process.

In 1989, I journeyed west to study theater at UCLA.  While there, I continued to write songs and work on my bass and guitar playing.  Music was mostly a hobby in college though.  My studies at the Theater Department kept me too busy to pursue much else.

After college, I began to further explore my musical ambitions by playing bass for a number of bands.  In 1997, I chose to put down my bass, pick up my acoustic guitar, and take my original songs out on the LA coffeehouse circuit.

This proved to be a very exciting and creative period for me.  I teamed up with a newly formed indie label called 7 Records to produce my first CD - Songs From the Counter of the Kettle, released in 2000.

In 2006, I started up two music companies of my own - Habersham Records and Larpin Lane Publishing (BMI).  My short term goal for these DBA’s is to record and distribute my own music.  In the long term, I hope to develop these companies into a business that can help other independent musicians do the same.

In February of 2008, I decided that eighteen years of living in LA was enough.  I packed up my life and moved the the Portland area to start anew.  I intend to finish work on my new CD and get involved in the very exciting music scene here in my new hometown.

After all these years, I still feel that I am just beginning my adventure.  I can’t wait to see what’s next!
